LiPo and LiFePO batteries have really changed the capabilities of hobby electronics. These new battery types have high capacity density and a high discharge rate, with is excellent for most hobby applications. Airsoft electronic guns (AEG) falls right into that category.
The only drawback to LiPo is its danger of overcharging and overdischarging. LiFePO is much safer in tese regards, but will still be damaged in those cases. With years of use in the hobby industry, it is somewhat surprising that the industry hasn't built protection circuits directly into the battery packs. Instead, it is up to each hobbist to ensure the batteries aren't damaged. That's where the Bluecell LiPo Digital Battery Voltage Checker comes in.
The Bluecell LiPo Digital Battery Voltage Check is a small circuit board with a big LCD and several pins at the edge (see photo below). It has numerous surface mount components and is protected in clear shrink wrap.
The pins at the end of the board is for interfacing with the balance charging connector on a LiPo or LiFePO battery pack. If you look closely at the marking behind the pins, you'll see the polarity. The chart indicates how many battery cells. For example, one cell will use the two bottom-most connectors. Two cells will use the three bottom-most connectors and so on. The photo below shows an example of a balance connector on a LiFePO battery pack.
Once you plug the Bluecell LiPo Digital Battery Voltage Checker into the balance connector, it provides output through the LCD. It first identifies the number of cells. Then it provides the battery pack voltage. Next, it provides the voltage of each cell, in turn. Then the process repeats itself. The following video demonstrates the output sequence.
The Bluecell LiPo Digital Battery Voltage Checker is great for many purposes. I especially like the confidence I get from it when I use my LiFe battery packs with my power tools.
