The U.S. military has found three-shot burst to be far more accurate on the M16 than semi-auto and full-auto. Therefore, each M16 build with three round burst mode. The reason for its accuracy is that three shots can leave the barrel before the recoil changes the trajectory of the bullets. With a good aimed shot, all rounds in three shots burst will likely land in close proximity on the target.
The airsoft electronic gun is a different beast from the real M16 rifle. But it still recoils (even though much less) when it fires. The piston smacking the cylinder head causes vibrations throughout the entire system. But do we really buy anything by installing a burst control module into the AEG? Should we use semi-auto or full-auto when we need that head shot? We aim to find the answer in this article.
We downloaded the following free target from Evike's web site. This target has inches markings. But Evike provided a raster (JPG) image, not a vector file. Therefore, when we printed the image on our laser printer, the target wasn't to scale. However, the 7" mark was practically exactly 7 centimeters on our print out. Therefore, it provides a good relative measurement.
This target worked so well in our previous tests, we have been using it ever since.
For this test, we used an APS ASR106 Mini Patriot M4. The APS ASR106 Mini Patriot M4 comes with a 175mm steel inner barrel. It is a 6.04mm tightbore, based on APS specifications. This inner barrel is mounted in a Bravo metal hop-up unit. The hop-up unit has been adjusted to be accurate and precise out to over 30 feet in an outdoor environment. In order to be as accurate and as precise as possible, we used a red dot sight into this test. The red dot sight is a Ultimate Arms Gear Tactical 4 Reticle Sight JH400 that is zero in at over 30 feet in an outdoor environment. It is mounted onto the Mini Patriot upper receiver. The APS ASR106 Mini Patriot M4 supports semi-auto and full-auto mode. It does not support three round burst. However, due to a mechanical failure in its trigger post, we fixed the problem (see our "Fixing Your AEG Broken Trigger Post" article) and installed the Burst Wizard King Kong Super 2 to provide semi-auto, three shot burst, and full-auto control. The controlled environment is a dim garage to eliminate external atmosphere factors. The target trap is located 20 feet from the shooter. The shooter will hand-hold the shots to simulate real combat situation, where 3 round burst in real life really shines, versus using a gun vise. 12-rounds will be fired into the target trap in semi-automatic, 3 shot burst, and full-auto mode. The shooter is free to take as much time as possible (within reason) to make accurate shots in the semi-auto mode. The shooter is free to take as much time as possible (within reason) to make accurate shots with four trigger pulls in 3-shot burst mode for a total of 12 rounds. The shooter will shoot all 12 round in one trigger pull in full-auto mode. Aim is performed with a single eye open (in order to reduce error) with the red dot directly on the center of the target (no manual adjustment of the shot is allowed). The red dot brightness is set to 1 in order to keep the MOA as small as possible, but highly visible this dim environment.
We tested the full-auto mode in the first fire test (shown below). We programmed the Burst Wizard King Kong Super 2 to fire a single shot burst, then enter full-auto mode after holding the trigger for 0.6 seconds. The gun placed 12 rounds into the target before it dry fired. The result was very accurate with rounds hitting the bullseye and its surrounding areas. The precision grouping measured 6cm x 6cm.
Next we tested the three-shot burst mode. Burst Wizard King Kong Super 2 allows you to configure any number of rounds in a burst. But we want to simulate the real M16 and see if 3-shot burst provides any improvement in an airsoft replica. So we programmed Burst Wizard King Kong Super 2 to fire three shot burst. By pulling the trigger four times, we placed 12 rounds into the target. The first time we pull the trigger, we realized it was the first time we ever fired an AEG with three-shot burst feature. We could see the red dot wavering off the target on the last burst. We believe the mark that is way off in the result below is that one shot. Therefore, in the subsequent three trigger pull we applied our semi-auto trigger discipline to match the longer three shot burst period. The result is still very accurate shots close to the bullseye. The precision grouping is 3.5cm x 5cm.
In our last test, we programmed the Burst Wizard King Kong Super 2 to provide single shot burst in order to simulate semi-auto mode. We fired twelve aimed shots into the target with the following result. The accuracy is excellent with three bullseye hits. The precision grouping is 5cm x 5cm.
