Governor Brown has signed and filed SB-199 on September 30, 2014, which changes the California airsoft laws. This changes impacts airsoft pistols and airsoft rifles in different ways. You can read the exact laws here: SB-199 BB devices. The laws comes into effect on January 1st, 2016. In this article, we are going to show you how to comply with the laws.
Based on the new laws, an airsoft handgun requires the blaze orange ring on the barrel. In addition, the airsoft pistol need to have a trigger guard and it needs to be fluorescent over the entire guard. The handgrip needs to have a fluorescent, two centimeter wide adhesive band (not intended for removal) around the circumference. The photo below shows what an Beretta 93R Machine Pistol would look like when it is in compliance.
It has a fluorescent band that is slightly wider than 2 cm. The entire trigger guard is fluorescent color. And it has an orange tip. It's Krylon Fluorescent 3105 Glowing Cerise spray paint, which we happen to have on hand. Once it's painted on, it's pretty obvious that we satisfied the "not intended for removal" clause.
There is another way to satisfy the pistol regulation. That is to paint the entire pistol with one of these colors: white, bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright blue, bright pink, or bright purple. Use the same fluorescent paint, we painted the entire Sig Sauer SP2022 with fluorescent color (see photo below). This paint job should fall into the bright red category.
There is yet one more way to comply. This last method requires your airsoft handgun to be transparent or translucent (see photo below). You can't really modify your airsoft gun to be transparent or translucent. They have to be purchased in this manner.
We find most spray paints to adhere to both plastic and metal airsoft guns quite well with very little prep. In this demonstration, we used the Krylon Fluorescent 3105 Glowing Cerise (see photo below) because it's been sitting in our workspace for years and years. It sprayed on easily and doesn't come off unless you scrape it off.
