We attended the Operation: Imperative Action this past Saturday. This operation had huge open fields with natural and artificial constructs. Our team was the Special Forces. It was a lot of fun and challenging. After our experience, I had learned some more techniques of operating in an open field in the dark. Here are some tactics I like to share:
1. The open field is lit by ambient light from the atmosphere. Sit around for 5 minutes to let your eyes adjust to the dark before moving out.
2. Stay off the road. Move slowly in the field. Feel the ground around you with your feet before committing to stepping forward.
3. Scan the field as you move. Don't tunnel vision yourself to your destination.
4. Avoid contact with the enemy, unless they are your primary/secondary objective. Eliminate targets with low signature kills if they prevent safe passage.
5. In the dark, red dot sight is very bright. Set it to the lowest setting. When you spots a target, keep your eyes trained on it, move the red dot into your eye sight, fire when the red dot is on the target, then move the red dot away from your eye sight to confirm the kill.
6. A good magnified sight allows you to see the crosshair in the dark with ambient light.
7. A laser sight is a an excellent designator for waypoint and enemy targets. Use it to communicate with your squad.
8. Avoid using flashlights. It just gives your position away. There are many times when we see the enemy flashlights. So we flank them and shoot them.
9. On an open field, DMR is king in a firefight. Bring one that is accurate at long distance.
10. Bring a red flashlight. The red flashlight does not destroy your natural night vision as quickly as white light. Use it in an emergency situation or for moving to the spawn point faster.
