Quite a few times, in the past few games, when I have been point man, my team mate would ask me to get down, so that he can see and shoot over me. That makes me think about the tactics of crouching and kneeling. The rule of thumb seems to be as much as possible. But let's examine this rule of thumb in greater detail.
As soon as you stop moving you should be crouching/kneeling. Obviously, you can't crouch/kneel all the time. Otherwise, you can't get anywhere. But as soon as you stop moving, you should crouch/kneel immediately. If you are on a fire team, it allows your team mate to look and shoot over you, doubling your firepower. If you are by yourself, it makes you a smaller target; helping you conceal.
There are time when you do want to stay standing up: 1) When you need to see and shoot over obstacles; 2) When cover could conceal your body better while standing (pole).
